Burroughs Wellcome Fund and NC SMT Center Named Presenting Sponsors of the 2020 National Science Olympiad Tournament
North Carolina Science Olympiad is pleased to announce Burroughs Wellcome Fund and North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center as the presenting sponsors of the 2020 National Science Olympiad Tournament.
“Both organizations have an incredible passion for innovation, STEM education, and career development – the same values that have driven Science Olympiad from the very beginning,” said Kim Gervase, NCSO Executive Director. “Our sponsors provide critical support and enhance the tournament experience for students, coaches, the community, and this collaboration with Burroughs Wellcome Fund and the SMT Center will allow us to bring unique experiences to students and forge new connections between STEM education and career development. “
The National Science Olympiad Tournament event will feature more than 2,000 of the country’s brightest middle and high school students converging at North Carolina State University to compete in one of the premier science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) competitions in the country. The tournament will attract thousands of visitors, educators, parents and family members, as well as current and past Olympiad participants to the Research Triangle.
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is an independent private foundation dedicated to advancing the biomedical sciences by supporting research and other scientific and educational activities.
“The Science Olympiad Tournament is an excellent model for creating relevant engagement in STEM concepts for students,” said Fund President Dr. John Burris. “We are proud to sponsor this endeavor as it shines a spotlight on STEM in North Carolina.”
The SMT Center is a non-profit organization focused on improving education as a means of providing all students in North Carolina with the knowledge and skills to have successful careers, be good citizens, and advance the economy of the state.
“Allowing the ability to problem-solve and put to practical use the STEM skills that students learn in the classroom is what makes the Science Olympiad a unique event for students,” said SMT Center President Sam Houston. “This is truly a hands-on STEM learning experience.”
North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public-school campuses across the state. These tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology. In 2018, more than 900 K-12 teams representing over 18,000 students and 85 counties in North Carolina participated in NCSO activities.
Current sponsors include North Carolina State University, BASF, Cree | Wolfspeed, Cisco, NC State University College of Sciences and SAS.
