#WonderChallenge Campaign Kicks Off Journey to 2020 National Science Olympiad Tournament
(RALEIGH, NC) — The 2020 National Science Olympiad Tournament Committee announced today a special campaign called #WonderChallenge to celebrate the year-long journey to the event on NC State’s campus in May 2020.
The #WonderChallenge was unveiled at Cornell University’s National Science Olympiad ceremonies to generate excitement for participants at the 2020 National Tournament in North Carolina. In partnership with the North Carolina Science Festival, the #WonderChallenge Campaign will feature a unique STEM challenge each month, sponsored by various North Carolina companies and organizations.
“We are thrilled to kick off the road to the 2020 National Tournament in North Carolina,” said Amy Baldwin, NC Science Olympiad Board President and Manager of Community Relations/Customer Events for BASF. “We are looking forward to engaging citizens by celebrating science and wonder as we gear up for the 2020 tournament.”
The #WonderChallenge Campaign will showcase a North Carolina partner from June 2019-May 2020 with a unique STEM challenge monthly. Participation is open to anyone and anywhere – schools, communities, families and organizations everywhere are eligible to join in the fun. Participants will tag their challenge entries with the hashtag #WonderChallenge and post on social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for judging and prize selection. Participating NC companies and organizations include Morehead Planetarium, Cree/Wolfspeed, BASF, Burroughs Wellcome Foundation, SAS Institute and Cisco Systems, just to name a few.
“The #WonderChallenge allows people to take the time to notice the beauty of science in their own backyard,” said Jonathan Frederick, Director of the North Carolina Science Festival. “Through the monthly challenges, it allows participants to experience how fun, accessible and engaging science can truly be.”

About North Carolina Science Olympiad
North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public school campuses across the state. These tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology. In 2019, more than 950 K-12 teams representing over 18,000 students and 75 counties in North Carolina participated in NCSO activities.
About the North Carolina Science Festival
The North Carolina Science Festival is a month-long celebration of science every April. In 2019, we’ll be bringing hundreds of events focused on fun, interactive science learning opportunities. Students, families, friends, STEM professionals, teachers, volunteers will all enjoy events taking place throughout North Carolina. An initiative of Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, the Festival highlights the educational, cultural and financial impact of science in this state. Through hands-on activities, science talks, lab tours, nature experiences, expos, exhibits and performances, the Festival engages a wide range of public audiences while inspiring future generations.
This Festival cultivates a positive environment that inspires children to pursue science-related careers and encourages businesses to invest in North Carolina. In an era when recent reports indicate that the United States is losing ground as the world leader in science and technology, and fewer students than ever are seeking careers in science and technology, the Festival energizes our state’s efforts to respond to these challenges.
About the National Science Olympiad National Tournament
The culmination of nearly 300 Regional and State tournaments (and about 100 practice Invitationals) is the Science Olympiad National Tournament, held at a different university each year. This rotating system gives students the opportunity to visit new parts of the country and tour colleges they might consider for their undergraduate studies and provides a memorable experience that lasts a lifetime. The 2020 Science Olympiad National Tournament will be held at North Carolina State University on May 13-16, 2020.
